What is Bounce Rate?

The percentage of visitors that arrive on a page but leave without taking any action is known as the bounce rate.

Google defines bounce rate as follows:

Bounce rate is single-page sessions divided by all sessions or the percentage of all sessions on your site in which users viewed only a single page and triggered only a single request to the Analytics server.”

In order to comprehend the bounce rate in Google Analytics 4 (GA4), let's first examine what the bounce rate in Universal Analytics is:

Bounce Rate is the percentage of sessions that contain a single page view on your website. Bounced users are those who only visited and viewed one page.

In terms of bounce rate, a session is said to be bounced if none of the following occur:

  • A visitor stays at least 10 seconds on a page

  • Completed any conversion event

  • A session consists of at least 2 pageviews

The percentage of sessions GA4 defines as "engaged" is the engagement rate.

If a session satisfies any of the following criteria, Google considers it engaged:

  • Had two or more views/pageviews

  • Had one or more conversion events

  • Lasted 10 or more seconds

How do you calculate the bounce rate in GA4?

In Google Analytics 4 (GA4) we calculate the bounce rate by dividing the number of bounces (non-engaged sessions) by the number of sessions.

Bounces(non-engaged session)/Sessions x 100 = Bounce Rate %

A high engagement rate and a low bounce rate are ideal.

Where to find Bounce Rate in GA4?

In contrast to Universal Analytics, GA4 reports do not immediately display the bounce rate. To see the results, you would need to build a custom report.

1. Click to Reports on the left.

2. Click the pencil symbol in the top-right corner (Customize report).

3. Click Metrics in the right sidebar to start.

4. Select Add metric, then search for Bounce rate again and click apply.

5. Don't forget to click the "Save" button if you want this change to stick.
